3D Globe

Spatial data on an interactive 3D Earth

Plot locations on a rotating globe by place name or by latitude and longitude. Names are resolved offline from a gazetteer built into the visual, so no report data ever leaves Power BI.

3D Globe

Illustration of the visual's layout.

A 3D globe is a world map drawn as a sphere, so land near the poles keeps its true size and a global sales or supply-chain picture reads as it does on a desk globe. ChartPad’s 3D Globe for Power BI plots your locations as bubbles on that sphere, sized and coloured by your measures.

The difference from the built-in map visuals is where place names are resolved. Bing and Azure Maps geocode on a server, which some tenants disallow. This visual carries its own gazetteer and resolves countries, regions and cities inside the report, so it keeps working in tenants where the built-in map visuals are switched off and in reports that must not send data outside Power BI. A Country/Region field settles ambiguous names, and Latitude and Longitude override the lookup for an exact position.

It is Microsoft-certified, so exports to PowerPoint and PDF and email subscriptions work as they do for a native visual.

Capabilities

  • Offline geocoding

Countries, states, provinces and the 5,000 largest cities resolve inside the visual, from a gazetteer built at package time. No lookup ever leaves the report.

  • Names or coordinates

Bind a place name and let it resolve, or override it row by row with exact Latitude and Longitude. A Country/Region field disambiguates names that occur twice.

  • Proportional bubbles

Map a measure to Size to scale each mark between a smallest and largest radius, and a Legend field to colour them by category.

  • Four map styles

Satellite, built from NASA Earth Observatory imagery, plus Dark, Light and Atlas — each with its own land, ocean and relief treatment.

  • Atmosphere and stars

Toggle clouds, terrain relief and the atmosphere glow, and set the density and brightness of the starfield behind the globe.

  • Rotation and zoom

Drag to rotate with tunable inertia, zoom on scroll or on Ctrl-scroll between your own near and far limits, and auto-rotate for dashboards left on screen.

  • Fixed starting view

Open on a continent, on coordinates you choose, or on Auto — which reads the viewer's timezone. A fixed view makes PDF and PowerPoint exports reproducible.

  • Tooltips and cross-filtering

Default and report-page tooltips, click-to-cross-filter with highlighting, multi-visual selection and keyboard focus.

Where it's used

  • Global sales and revenue distribution by market
  • Supply chain, logistics and distribution networks
  • Demographics, audience and user-base maps
  • IoT and connected-device telemetry
